Letters to the Editor: UConn fans, students sound off on coach's scuffle with reporter
Issue date: 3/6/09 Section: Commentary
Basketball coach Jim Calhoun's reaction to the appropriate question pertaining to his $1.6 million yearly salary was a respose of guilt, asserts this former Roman Catholic seminarian.
Calhoun's conscience, infused with truth issued by the Holy Spirit, is counseling his intellect that he is being greedy. Calhoun is denying the infallable counsel of the Holy Spirit. Catholic Jim Calhoun refuses to believe that he is morally culpable in committing the mortal sin of greed.
It is Lent. Let Calhoun go to confession with a Catholic priest, and confess the sin of greed, repent and be absolved. Calhoun is making us Catholics look like greed mongers.
- Joseph E. Vallely, Washington Green, Conn.
One thing is for certain: the now-famous Calhoun tirade on Saturday, Feb. 21, is indeed an embarrassment. Calhoun, however, has no need to feel ashamed of himself.
The ones who should be embarrassed are Gov. M. Jodi Rell and state senators Mary Ann Handley and Roberta Willis for reprimanding Calhoun's heated defense of his salary. A freelance reporter questioned Calhoun about his $1.6 million salary when not only our state, but also our country, is in such an economic crisis. He then brought up Calhoun's contract with Comcast Digital Cable.
Calhoun, in his response, tossed out some numbers of his own.
"Quite frankly, we bring in $12 million to the university; nothing to do with state funds," he said. He then followed this statement to the press by telling the reporter to get some facts before further questioning him.
Our governor and several of our state senators want to reprimand Calhoun and bring some disciplinary action to him. Why? Yes, his defense of his salary was in many ways overboard, but are you saying that the $12 million alone isn't enough for him to get angry when his salary is questioned?
The $12 million doesn't even begin to describe what Calhoun has done for not only the university, but also the state of Connecticut. Calhoun literally put UConn basketball on the map. Period. No questions asked.

If half of you could do the quailty of work that Jim has done in winnign and returning money for UConn, UConn would be a better place. As it is not a sionghle one of you has donated time and money to UCONN and the community at even a fraction of what Jim has donr. (Continued…)

Maybe if Jim Calhoun had donr a better job as coach and was winnign even more money, UConn could afford remedial grammar and spelling lessons for the people who post on the Daily Campus website, so that they'w wouldn't have to be thjis embarressed
