UConn will look to have some fun in the sun and win a few matches as the women's tennis team travels south to Orlando, Fla., over spring break. It will be a business trip, as the Huskies will take on Valparaiso, Radford, Hillsborough Community College and South Dakota State.
Last season, during a similar trip, UConn defeated Radford 4-3 and Valparaiso 7-0. This season Valparaiso is 2-7, and Radford is 4-3. South Dakota State and Hillsborough CC each have a 5-4 record on the year.
"I am not worried about any distractions when we go down to Florida," coach Glenn Marshall said. "We have five or six days of matches and practice and then the last day or two we will enjoy it down there."
It will also be UConn's first opportunity to play outdoors this season. So far, all of the Huskies' matches and practices have been indoors due to the weather.
"After being stuck in Chicago last weekend, we are desperately looking forward to playing outside in the warm weather," Marshall said.
The Huskies were swept in the Windy City by Big East opponents DePaul and Marquette, and UConn is 0-4 on the young season. However, Marshall is not worried.
"We've played tough teams to start the year. Stony Brook and Army are both regional powers and DePaul and Marquette are both nationally ranked, and our injuries have not helped. Losing two starters has definitely hindered us so far," Marshall said.
Sophomore Emily Herb will likely play at the top of the lineup in Florida. It will be her first time on the courts since injuring her wrist this winter. The team's goal is to use the trip to get Herb, and others on the team, ready for Big East play. None of the matches in Orlando will be against Big East teams. Although UConn is 0-2 to start their Big East schedule, their ultimate goal of being in the top 12, and making the conference tournament, is well within reach. The Huskies hope winning in Orlando will start a magical season.
