The UConn softball team traveled down south for spring break, participating in two tournaments over the course of the week and playing 12 games in 10 days. The Huskies first played in the South Florida Tournament in Tampa (March 6 - 8) where they went 3-2.
UConn opened the tournament with a dominating 10-0 win over St. Bonaventure, but followed that victory up with a disappointing 6-4 loss against Loyola-Chicago.
The Huskies would bounce back in their next game with a convincing 9-2 victory over Evansville, but couldn't keep their momentum going as they fell to Boston University 3-0 later that day.
The Huskies finished the tournament on a high note, however, crushing Hofstra 6-1 in the final game. Following the tournament, catcher Danielle Del Ponte, third baseman Jillian Ortega and second baseman Julianne Towers were named to the South Florida All-Tournament team.
Shortly after the tournament, UConn opened Big East play with a double-header against conference rival South Florida. The day was not kind to UConn, as South Florida would shut out the Huskies twice over the course of the day by scores of 2-0 and 5-0. The Huskies would only collect seven hits between the two games, and only three baserunners would reach third.
UConn came back with a vengeance in the San Diego Invitational (March 12-15) where they would go 4-1 in the tournament. The Huskies started things off with a dramatic extra-inning victory over San Diego. With the score tied 3-3 in the eighth inning, senior Jillian Ortega hit the go-ahead home run to give the Huskies a 4-3 lead that they would not relinquish. The Huskies kept the momentum going, topping New Mexico State 2-1, shutting out Northern Colorado 3-0, and defeating Texas Tech 4-1 before falling to Oklahoma State 4-0 in the final game of the tournament.
The Huskies return from spring break with a season record of 8-8, and will play at Quinnipiac on Thursday, March 19.
