We are well into the spring semester and it is time for Undergraduate Student Government elections. During the spring elections, students may run for office. If you have been paying attention to the recent issues within USG - the threats of impeachment against Comptroller Jason Ortiz and the unrest about the results of the tuition survey, along with many more inside disturbances - you should realize how bad USG's inconsistency and corruption is for our campus. If you feel strongly about this and wish you could do something, this is your chance.

Applications to run for office are available Monday, March 23 in the USG office in the Student Union. The application process is simple and the requirements are straightforward. If you believe you are capable of playing a part in UConn's student government just step up and run.

The positions up for election include academic senators, multiculturalism and diversity senators, executive officers, and justices. The academic senators represent each of the colleges within UConn. The multiculturalism and diversity senators are elected depending on the needs of the groups. Executive officers include the office of the president, vice president, comptroller and so on. The executive branch is in charge of running the government. The justices are part of the judicial branch of USG and are responsible for making sure everything goes according to the USG constitution. For example, they are present at senate meetings to enforce rules.

Each position in USG is extremely important and requires full attention and dedication. This is not a job that can be taken lightly, or the entire university will feel the effects of your disregard. Holding a political office for USG is a great resume builder, but that should be an ancillary benefit. USG office-seekers must know that their time in office is one that should be spent advocating for UConn students, and not increasing your contacts. As long as you are ready for this commitment and all the responsibilities this job entails, go run for office.

Find out more about the specifics of running for USG by picking up a packet in their office. If you feel inspired to run, do it. UConn students need all the voices dedicated to their representation that they can get. The times are hard and USG deserves the best UConn has to offer. Is it you?
