Cutting back bus service to save money
Issue date: 3/20/09 Section: Commentary
In support of cutting some bus service: Cindy Luo
• Every service on campus costs money, and we need to prioritize. Reliable class transportation for students is a high priority, and should not be cut.
• Many students don't have time to get from class to class (particularly on days with only 10 minutes between classes) without taking a bus. Otherwise, they'll be late.
• Making less frequent bus runs will only make the existing buses more congested. As it is, the buses are already frequently overcrowded. Cutting buses will exacerbate this problem.
• Buses can be made more environmentally efficient. Doing so will ultimately save money; you need to spend money to save money.
• Buses are an integral part of ensuring students a safe, efficient mode of transit. With so many cars on campus, minimizing pedestrians helps prevent accidents.
• Our current bus system is tried and true. It is superior to any alternatives. It provides an adequate, cost-effective mode of transportation for students. Eliminating some bus services would only cause more problems.
Against cutting some bus service: Gabe Kovacs
• It costs money to keep the buses running, and since we need to cut budgets, why don't we cut bus service?
• People can walk or bike from one side of campus to another. Stop being lazy, people!
• I don't see how cutting bus service will create further "congestion." Once people realize that the buses have smaller capacity, they will start walking or biking instead!
• Buses are environmentally unfriendly.
• Students should have the option of paying a transit fee and using the buses if they pay the fee. Students could swipe their ID cards if they want to pay the fee and use the bus. That would address the over-congestion on the buses by cutting the number of passengers.
• Obesity, money and the environment are all problems that would be solved by cutting bus service!

Both of you retards forgot to take into consideration the commuter students, to whom the buses are essential.

Will is right. As it stands right now, X lot and Y lot are completely full 95% of the time during normal class time, forcing us to park and take the bus into campus (or face a good 10-15 minute walk at least). (Continued…)
