At the halfway point of the regular season, the women's lacrosse team has been unable to crack the win column, struggling to a 0-8 start.
UConn will look to finally get a win under its belt Saturday as the Huskies host Ivy League opponent, Brown Saturday at 1 p.m. at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium, in their last non-conference game before their Big East schedule begins.
In their last game - a 14-12 loss to Harvard on Wednesday - the Huskies were dominated in the first half, falling behind 11-6 at the break. Despite a much improved performance in the second period, the deficit proved to be too much and they were unable to break their losing streak.
"I thought we started to play well, play together in the second half," midfielder Laura Eichert said. "But it just turned out to be too late."
Captain Whitney Michele led the way with eight points, her highest total in a very productive career. "We know we're going to get a good game from [Michele] everyday," said midfielder Megan Bohns. "She's one of our leaders."
On Saturday, Michele and the Huskies will square off against a 3-2 Brown team that is also fresh off of a game against Harvard. In the team's Ivy League opener, they were led to a 12-8 victory by senior Jesse Nunn. Nunn's effort against the Crimson - four goals, one assist - garnered her Ivy League Player of the Week honors, and she is the team's leading scorer despite missing the first two games of the season with an injury.
The Brown stingy defense is anchored by freshman goaltender Isabel Harvey, and has been one of the primary reasons for the team's winning record, allowing just 7.6 goals per game.
In their effort to top the talented Bears defense, the UConn attack will continue to be led by Michele and the freshmen duo of M.E. Lapham and Kiersten Tupper. Trailing only Michele, Lapham and Tupper are the second and third goal scorers on the team, respectively, while Tupper has collected a team-high 18 assists. Katy Ryan, Katie Devaney and Ashley Mitchelides are all coming off of multipoint performances against Harvard as well.
The Huskies are eager for another chance to combine their efforts for a full game, and capture their long-awaited first victory.
"We can only play one game at a time," Eichert said. "The earlier games are over, so we're learning from them and moving on. When we get the first one, more will come."
