After an 0-4 start to the season, the UConn women's tennis team will try to remain upbeat and confident after going 4-0 on Spring Break. The team will begin the heart of Big East play at Syracuse this morning at 11 a.m.
"The Lady Huskies had great energy and played solid tennis all around. It was a good trip for team bonding and to get acclimated to playing in the outdoors," said senior captain BreAnn Cheung of the team's trip to Orlando, Fla.
UConn (4-4) beat South Dakota State, Valparaiso and Radford easily. The highlight of the trip was a close 5-4 victory over Hillsborough Community College, ranked No. 1 in the nation for junior colleges. Cheung had the clinching victory in the win against Hillsborough.
"It felt good to go 4-0 and come home undefeated in Florida," Cheung said.
Although none of the matches were against Big East teams, UConn would like to use this as a springboard to its conference schedule. The Huskies are 0-2 in the Big East after losses earlier this season on the road to Marquette and DePaul.
This Friday starts a stretch of 11 matches within the Big East in the Huskies' next 12 matches. The only non-Big East match in the stretch is against Quinnipiac. This also starts a brutal streak of five matches in nine days. Three of these matches are at home.
Saturday morning, UConn faces Georgetown in the first of five home matches this season. Last year, UConn lost at home to Syracuse 6-1, while the Huskies then traveled to Washington D.C. and defeated the Hoyas 4-3.
Cheung said, "We are excited to bounce back from a tough start to our season. We are ready to roll and take on the thick of our Big East competition."
