USG upholds funding appeal

At an appeal Wednesday night, the USG judicial board and comptroller agreed to overturn a funding board decision and pay $2,500 for the Greek Week Barbeque.
According to Funding Board Vice Chair Brien Buckman, the board had denied the application for funding put forward by the Greek Week Management Team on the grounds that the event seemed geared toward Greek life members, and that its location in Husky Village was so far on the outskirts of campus that it discouraged full campus participation.
"Places like Husky Village, Hilltop or Mansfield Apartments, for example, are sort of towards the outliers [of campus], the funding board does not feel that those locations are really open to UConn students," he said.
Buckman also said that the funding board usually only provided catering when the food was a side-event to another, larger event, and in this case, the food was itself a major part of the celebration.
Funding board had recommended that since Husky Village is a residential area, that the greeks seek assitance from Student Affairs for funding.
The Greek Week Management Team, represented by Lindsay Becker, an 8th-semester marketing major, and Stacy Ramsey an 8th-semester real estate and urban economics major, argued that there were no other readily available, or well equipped places for a barbeque closer to the center of campus, and that outskirts or not, their event was still on-campus, and available to anyone who wanted to come.
"We're really looking to involve the rest of the campus this year," Becker said.
They also said that before coming to USG for funding on just one of their seven Greek Week events, the team had exhausted funding from the Office of Fraternities and Sororities, their area council and the Panhellenic Council.
The barbeque will take place April 4 on the basketball court between Husky Village and W Lot, and will feature volleyball, live music and a food drive for the Willimantic Food Pantry.
