Young stars emerge each season in every sport. As the baseball season is set to get underway, there are several young players who are primed for breakout seasons and can become young stars for years to come. Here are a few of them who should have big seasons.
David Price, SP, Tampa Bay Rays - Price has already burst onto the scene with his performance in the playoffs as a reliever, but he hasn't even begun to scratch the surface of what he can become. He has the makings of a great No. 1 starter and while he may begin this season in the minors once again to get a routine on track to avoid being overused, you can be sure he will make his mark in the starting rotation before long. The Rays have the young talent to stick around with the Yankees and Red Sox, so don't plan on them going anywhere. Price is one of the reasons the defending American League champs will make another run this year.
Matt Wieters, C, Baltimore Orioles - Wieters is being compared to Mark Teixeira, but at the catcher position. Many scouts believe he can step in right now and be one of the best hitters in the Orioles' lineup. Not just an offensive threat, Wieters is a huge target at about 6-foot-5 and has the defensive skills necessary to remain at the catching position. The Orioles may keep him in the moinors to fine tune some things at the start of the season, but expect him to make an impact no later than the end of May.
Chris Davis, 1B, Texas Rangers - Davis had a solid year last season and has the potential to be a 35-home run guy this year. Though he strikes out a lot, most power hitters do, and he should have a field day hitting in Texas, with the starting job for a full season.
