Sports section should cover all UConn's teams
I know the track team isn't as popular or as important in the eyes of people on this campus like basketball or football is, but recently I have felt that we have been ignored, and in some parts disrespected as athletes who compete for this university. On March 13 and 14, the men and women's track and field team competed at the NCAA indoor track and field championships during our spring break and five members - three men and two women - earned All-American honors.
This was an exciting time for the program and the thought of our peers knowing about our accomplishments was also exciting.
Unfortunately, looking at The Daily Campus that Monday (March 16) and seeing the Storrs Side column was disappointing. The story included just one sentence about the track team and did not even recognize the five athletes by their names or their events that received the All-American honors.
As student athletes who work hard for this school not only on the track but also in the classroom, we deserve better. Mike Rutt and Brian Gagnon (800-meter run), Marquis Thomas (high jump), Victoria Flowers (weight throw) and I, Carin Knight (high jump), deserve better respect than what we got in our own school newspaper.
We understand that we are not the basketball team or the football team, and we understand that we don't fill up stadiums like they do, but at the end of the day, we are ALL athletes and deserve the same respect that any other team would get. We all wear the same name on our uniforms, and we all compete for the same school. I think that it's time to start being recognized for the athletes we are and stop being treated like second-class citizens.

I am a member of the UConn women's varsity rowing team. My teammates and I have been discussing our lack of representation in The Daily Campus' upcoming matches section. We feel that our team should be included; we are an NCAA Division I sport and want our student body to see where we are heading and what we are doing. It is very important, otherwise it seems like we are being left unnoticed.

How does giving the first black president of this country devalue our degree? The man is a truly historical figure and a Harvard graduate. As a Uconn graduate I would be honored to know that he shared a Uconn degree. (Continued…)

He absolutely would've been offered an honorary degree, regardless - Hogan just found a way to make it a bit more fun. And perhaps a way to get him to accept the honor. (Continued…)
