This film festival is both a national event and a traveling charity opportunity, funded and put together by Luna. Luna, whose product tag line is "the whole nutrition bar for women," has a main goal of highlighting women as filmmakers and promoting awareness toward women's issues during this event, according to Lunafest director Anoush Mushegian, an 8th-semester communications major.
The film festival will feature 10 short films ranging from quirky animation to heavier fictional drama, and cover topics such as motherhood, women's health, relationships, body image, cultural diversity and breaking through barriers. The films will focus on "real world issues," according to Mushegian.
"The festival is a unique platform for women," Mushegian said. "An opportunity to express themselves as artists, filmmakers and individuals."
Lunafest will be presented throughout 170 different venues across the nation this year during its eighth season.
"I really hope to make Lunafest a staple event on campus," Mushegian said. "It's an amazing night that really seeks to unite the campus with the Storrs community in a celebration of women. And of course, it's all for two really great causes."
The national benefiting organization, the Breast Cancer Fund, is a pioneering charity whose mission is to "identify and eliminate environmental and other preventable causes of the disease through research and education," according to their Web site.
Nationally, the event thus far has raised over $200,000 for the Breast Cancer Fund and over $470,000 for a variety of other women's non-profit organizations.
The screening will be followed by door prize giveaways and a catered reception. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
