UConn (7-8) will make a westward trip to Morgantown, W. Va. to face Pittsburgh and West Virginia. The Huskies will play the Panthers on Saturday; Pitt is 5-1 in the Big East. The Panthers have lost two straight matches in the last week.
Pitt's first loss in conference came to Syracuse, losing 6-1. Pitt lost to their city rival Duquesne, 5-2, Wednesday. UConn did not play Pittsburgh last season.
The Mountaineers are 7-11 this spring, with a 3-2 record in the Big East. The Huskies are still 2-4 in the Big East. Last year, West Virginia came to Storrs and smoked the Huskies 6-1. It won't be an easy weekend for UConn in either match.
"It will be two dog fights this weekend versus two tough teams," coach Glenn Marshall said. "Pitt is a very good Big East team; West Virginia is a fully funded program, which means they have eight full-scholarship athletes."
"We only get three scholarships, which hurts us, but we will play tough and try to win," Marshall said.
The Huskies have had a good week thus far, beating rival Quinnipiac at home 5-1 on Tuesday. The NEC powerhouse was subdued by the Huskies in doubles and was dominated in singles play.
"It was a good test for us. It was great to see everyone step up, really fight hard and take the win," junior Alison Campitiello said.
UConn was scheduled to play Providence on Thursday. The match was moved to Wednesday, but was rained out. The Huskies made the short trip to Rhode Island and played some of the match before calling it. UConn had the lead on the host Friars before the match was called.
The Huskies will have to look ahead to their long road trip this weekend and try to pull off a couple of upsets to improve their record in conference play.
