The undergraduate student trustee election will begin next week, where students will have the opportunity to cast a vote for a new member of the Board of Trustees. Voting is held at vote.uconn.edu from April 13 through April 15.
As a student representative on the Board of Trustees, the undergraduate student trustee will be a sitting member with full voting power. He or she will act as the voice of the student body.
The undergraduate student trustee will have the tremendous responsibility of voting for measures that directly impact students, such as tuition increases, the expenditure of UConn's budget and spring weekend initiatives.
This year, there are two candidates seeking the two-year term of undergraduate student trustee:
Elly Koskorelos is a junior psychology major at UConn's Stamford Campus. She is the vice president of the Stamford campus' Student Government Association and a member of Psi Chi Honor Society.
Koskorelos said she decided to run because she feels she could be a great advocate for UConn students.
"I know right now we're all facing huge budget cuts," said Koskorelos. "I want to make sure students are still graduating on time and getting the classes they need. I want to make sure the quality of education isn't compromised."
Koskorelos said she would work with students from every campus to make certain the needs of each campus are met.
If elected, Koskorelos hopes to create an open relationship with students. She feels that encouraging an open dialogue will her ensure student's ideas and concerns will be recognized by the Board of Trustees.
Corey Schmitt is a sophomore political science major at UConn's main campus in Storrs. He is the speaker of the senate for USG and an undergraduate student representative in the University Senate.
Schmitt said he decided to run because he wants to make an impact at UConn in a greater capacity than USG allows. He said that the Board of Trustees' recent decision to ignore student's opinion on next year's tuition increase convinced him to run for student trustee.
"I really want to take my knowledge and experience and make a significant change based on what the students actually want here on campus," Schmitt said. "We're the ones who pay thousands of dollars to go here, not the faculty. I think the students need to have a bigger say in what happens in this university."
Schmitt said that, if elected, he hopes to meet with the student government leaders from each UConn campus once a month to address individual campus issues and concerns.
In the print version of this story, the Web site for voting was referred to as "uvote.uconn.edu." The actual voting web site is vote.uconn.edu.
In addition, voting will take place Monday, April 13, through Wednesday, April 15, not Wednesday through Friday, as was originally reported.
we regret the errors.

i know the person at the stamford branch is probably really qualified and all and the board of trustees represents all branches, but I think it is important the student representative comes from Storrs. (Continued…)
