When Huskies and Terriers face off it is always a dogfight, and the Huskies' match against the Boston University Terriers promises to be just that. BU will make the short trip down from Massachusetts to Storrs for UConn's second-to-last home match of the season at 3 p.m. today at the UConn tennis courts. UConn is coming off a 4-3 loss at the hands of MAAC-powerhouse Fairfield. But UConn's spring record is 5-5, with their overall record 8-6.
On the flip side, Boston's season has not been as successful. The Terriers come into the game with a 2-14 record, most recently losing to Division-1 newcomer NJIT 4-3 at home. But UConn won't take the Terriers lightly because of their record. The Huskies faced Big East nemesis Georgetown on March 21, with a 6-3 overall record, while the Hoyas were 2-13 going into the match. The end result wasn't pleasant, as Georgetown left Storrs and returned home to. with a 5-2 win. The Huskies take every opponent seriously, and it is no different with BU.
"It will be a great non-conference test for us," said senior co-captain Joey Michaels. "BU is usually a strong and deep team," he concluded.
Seniors Miron Nissim, Tim Sichler, and Charles Weinstein are Boston's go-to guys in single matches, along with underclassmen Regis Chang and Bill Kring. Junior Jeff Chudacoff has been playing well, in both singles and doubles matches as of late. The duo of Chudacoff and Weinstein may give the Huskies trouble.
But, the Huskies have a terrific team of their own, as they will counter Boston's top guns with junior Joe Goldstein and senior Ben Schueler in doubles, and sophomore Andrew Marcus and Freshman Dave Adams in singles. Marcus has set the bar high of late, winning his last two singles matches, with one of those wins sealing the deal against Quinnipiac. But any other singles player may get the clincher this week, especially with Adams and Goldstein playing well of late.
It will be a tough few days for the only seniors on the team, co-captains Michaels and Schueler. After today's match against the Terriers, the Villanova Wildcats make the trip up to Storrs for UConn's last home match of the season. It will also be the last home match of Michaels and Schueler's career. But right now BU stands the UConn's way before Senior Day Saturday afternoon.
