The first game started off quick for the Huskies, who scored three runs off the bat thanks to a two-run single by Amy Deluca, followed by an RBI double by Justyne Roy. The score would remain 3-0 until the bottom of the 5th, when the Huskies would add to their lead with three more runs to make the score 6-0.
It seemed that the Huskies had the game in hand until the top of the seventh, when Rutgers pushed two runners across the plate after a Tricia Sullivan error, which also foiled a potential double play. With two runners on and no outs, outfielder Erin Burtner made a fantastic catch at the fence to record the first out, and Sullivan would record her seventh strikeout for the second out. Despite this, a flurry of Rutgers base hits brought them all the way back to a 6-5 score, at which point Rachael Crossin was brought in to record the final out, which she did to seal the victory for the Huskies.
In the second game, Crossin returned to the mound and shut down the Scarlet Knights from the start, smothering any momentum they may have had from the first game and holding them to a mere four hits without allowing a run. Offense would be scarce in this game, but two solo home runs from Danielle Del Ponte and Micah Truax, in the 5th and 6th innings, respectively, were all the Huskies would need to come out on top. The final score was 2-0.
Following the game, head coach Karen Mullins commended her players for stepping up after nearly falling apart in the first game. She pointed out pitcher Rachel Crossin in particular for finishing the first game and then going the distance in the second.
"Rachael had a strong outing; she only walked one player, and had a nice changeup," said Mullins. "She really had a wonderful outing, and strong finish, which we were very pleased with."
Crossin was quick to credit her teammates when asked about her performance, citing the solid defense that the Huskies continued to display yesterday.
"We made some sick plays in the field today," Crossin said. "They made my job a lot easier. I just had to keep the ball over the plate, and let them do the work."
When asked about her having to come into the first game to record the last out, she added, "it's my job to do."
There was some concern after the last out for game one's starting pitcher, Tricia Sullivan. Sullivan displayed some minor swelling in her hand after she was taken out, but according to Mullins, the injury doesn't appear to be serious and she should be ready to go for the weekend series against Notre Dame.
