The Huskies were looking to send their two seniors home happy. Instead, their last match in Connecticut ended with a loss. UConn men's tennis lost to Villanova on Saturday's senior day, by a score of 4-3.
The match, which was originally scheduled for the UConn tennis courts, was moved indoors due to rain, and was played at the East Hartford Racquet Club.
Just days after UConn demolished Boston University, 6-1, in what proved to be the last match in Storrs, the momentum was quickly halted by the Wildcats' key doubles victories.
"It was a very tight match, said senior co-captain Joey Michaels. "The doubles point proved to be extremely important."
UConn lost all three doubles matches, but the tide started to turn their way in singles. In the first two matches, Joe Goldstein and Andrew Marcus were victorious. But in the third, fourth and fifth matches Villanova took hold of the lead. Michaels, Scott Warden and Dave Adams all fell at the hands of the Wildcats. Tom Cook did not finish the sixth match.
A demoralizing defeat like this will not sting too long, as the Huskies get another chance at Villanova this Thursday in the first round of the Big East Championship, held in Tampa, Fla.
"A couple of tight sets and matches didn't go our way, but we will be very excited when we play them in the first round," Michaels said.
