The Huskies are heading to Tampa, Fla., and not a moment too soon. UConn clinched a spot in this week's Big East tournament by defeating Villanova 6-1 on Senior Day Saturday. The match was not held in Storrs, but indoors at the East Hartford Racquet Club due to rain.
Villanova ended a rough regular season Saturday, but gave the Huskies fits in doubles. Although BreAnn Cheung and Ali Campitiello won their doubles match, the one and three doubles spots for UConn were not victorious. This gave the Wildcats the point for doubles after a 2-1 decision.
"It was a tougher match than expected, especially at doubles, but we had a great day at singles," Cheung said.
UConn turned it on in singles, winning all six matches. Cheung won her match in straight sets, while Campitiello and Kelley LoRusso won in three sets. By the end of the day, the last singles matches were merely a formality, as the Huskies had already punched their tickets to Florida.
"I am thrilled to have qualified this year," Cheung said. "I was worried that we would not make the postseason in my senior year so I am very excited."
The Huskies finished the regular season with a 9-11 record and a 4-8 Big East record. The tournament will start Thursday for UConn and the team is looking forward to a great reward for an up-and-down season.
"It's always a good trip to go down to Florida for a week for the Big East," Cheung said.
