Drunken hook-ups are simply awesome. Standing at a party drooling all over each other's faces, tongues thrashing and colliding, breathing in cheap alcoholic fumes from each other's mouths, ripped condom wrappers on the floor, not remembering a thing in the morning…
Oh yeah, that's the stuff.
But, what happens when you take away the alcohol? How does hooking up sober happen when you're not in a comfortable relationship?
Alcohol is a social lubricant which leads to blurred judgment and humping without thought. It makes getting to know someone a simpler and less awkward process.
For some, it's easier to engage in sexual activities when you can explain to friends later, "I totally banged it out with so-and-so last night… but I was so wasted!"
According to Heather Corrina of RHRealityCheck.org, "What feels right when we're drunk often only does because we're drunk. If you feel uncomfortable with the idea of sex sober, it may just be because sex isn't right for you just yet, or you don't have a partner yet who is the right person for you to be sleeping with."
Alcohol should not be used as a sexual crutch, and hooking up sober can be more rewarding (and less nauseating) the morning after.
"If you don't know the person and you do it sober, it's so awkward. You don't trust them and it's weird," said Audrey van Roosen, an 8th-semester psychology major. "But if you really like the person and they hook-up with you sober, then they actually like you and it isn't a drunken mistake… it's genuine."
Sexual experiences are meant to be about exploring another person's body and desires. This is much harder when both parties are inebriated. Being sober can help both people to clearly explain what they like, what they are comfortable with and just how damn good it feels when they are touched that way.
Another advantage? Sober hookups are almost never a mistake or accident. There is no safety net of being so totally hammered, so there is no excuse for any sexual relations.
This is a benefit to anyone looking for more than a one-night ride. This experience will bond two people, and will show that you are both comfortable enough with one another to consider maybe even taking a relationship further.
No one is going to want to buy the cow that's giving away all that the vodka-laced milk for free. So, next time you get the opportunity, give being sober and sexy a chance.
