A response to UConn rowing
Marc Gauthier
Issue date: 4/15/09 Section: Sports
Alright. Let's try to resolve this.
One fight, no holds barred, winner takes all. The Daily Campus sports section versus the UConn rowing team.
Okay, so that's a little dramatic.
For those who do or do not know, the rowing team has had a little beef with the sports section.
In the InstantDaily on Monday, a rather large statement was published on behalf of what I'm assuming to be a member of the rowing team.
If you missed it, here it is.
"You know what kills me? We have had a rowing team for 10 years and we are in our racing spring season and are winning and we are never - not once - in The Daily Campus, but the tennis teams, which no one gives a crap about, get an article about their big losses this weekend. Makes sense. I want to see the rowing team in there. Guess what - we exist, believe it or not, and we probably do more than half the sports on this campus. You wake up at 4:30 every day to practice and tell me if you want to see your team in The Daily Campus for a little recognition. OK, that is all."
First off, I want to applaud this anonymous writer for submitting a 120-word paragraph that actually got into the InstantDaily. I'm not going to lie - I'm impressed.
As a side note, I want to address a witty response to this that appeared in Tuesday's InstantDaily.
For those who missed that, here it is.
"Why should The Daily Campus cover rowing? It's not a sport; it's a form of transportation. They don't cover the bus drivers."
I'm sorry, but I think it's terribly clever and funny. I applaud the person who came up with this one.
While I find the second post hysterical, I'm sure it has infuriated the anonymous writer who posted on behalf of the rowing team.
With all that being said, I want to come clean, and hopefully resolve any lingering issues between the rowing team and the Sports section of The Daily Campus.
We get it. The rowing team hasn't received any coverage this season, or last season. Come to think of it, I'm not sure when the last time rowing got any coverage in the paper. I'll be the first one to admit that it's not fair to the student-athletes on the rowing team, who do all this hard work and aren't rewarded by having their names in the paper.

Maybe if we had a Men's Lacrosse team we'd actually have something interesting to read about in the sports section in the spring. Every year from late march until the end of the year the sports section is a snoozefest. (Continued…)

liked the article...
possible ideas for your "situation"
anything wrong with just contracting out some of the sports articles to each sport? If someone on the rowing team wants UConn to know what happened, i would think the easiest way is for someone on the team to write a few paragraphs up and submit it as a news story. (Continued…)

I'm pretty sure that Uconn rowing is pretty pathetic and doesn't deserve much recognition from anybody.

In response to Orlando, to have a member of a team write a story would be a conflict of interest -- they would not be an objective observer and thus, whatever they hand in may be viewed by some as tainted due to their affiliation with the team. (Continued…)

Peter, tell me what do you do that makes you any better than the puny pathetic rowing team at uconn? DO YOU get up at 5am 6 times a week to workout? DO YOU add another workout on top of that EVERYDAY? DO YOU PUT 18-21 hours of your time a week to working out? NO, so shove a pickle in your mouth. (Continued…)

I know the rowing team works really hard and accomplishes a lot, but to be honest, who would want to read about them? I know I wouldn't. There is no analysis, just one team going faster than the other. (Continued…)

A correction for those who think that rowing is not a sport. It was actually the first collegiate sport in this country and the Yale-Harvard race which takes place every June in New London, CT is the oldest collegiate sports rivalry. (Continued…)

I just wanted to throw my two cents in on this topic, since it seems to be such a heated discussion at the moment. During my time at UConn, I am fairly positive that the crew team was recognized more than a handful of times in the Daily Campus. (Continued…)
