The softball team returned to Storrs yesterday for an out of conference match-up against Ivy League power Dartmouth (18-15). The two programs had only met once before, that being a 12-1 Huskies victory in 2006. The game yesterday was a far more competitive affair, but the Huskies pulled out the victory by a final score of 5-3. With the victory the Huskies now move to 25-12 on the season, and have won 11 of their last 12 games.
Jess Arremony got the scoring started for the Huskies in the second inning, sending a bloop single into centerfield to score Justyne Roy and give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. After Dartmouth's Ashley Gleason hit a two run homer in the top of the 3rd, the Huskies responded with three more runs of their own.
Julianne Towers would start off with a single, then moved to second after Micah Truax followed up with a single of her own, and then scored when Amy DeLuca sent a double down the left field line. Truax and DeLuca would also both score a few batters later, Truax after a Jillian Ortega sacrifice fly, and then DeLuca after a single by Arremony. The Huskies held a 4-2 lead once the inning had ended.
The score would remain 4-2 until the 6th inning, thanks in large part to freshman Jessie Stavola's strong effort. In the top of the 6th however, an error by Julianne Towers would score a run, chipping away at the lead. The Huskies would respond in the bottom of the frame, however, after Towers came back with an RBI single scoring Arremony. Towers was a perfect 4/4 on the day with a run scored and an RBI. Rachel Crossin would finish the game and earn the save by shutting down the Dartmouth bats in the 7th inning, sealing the 5-3 victory. Jessie Stavola earned her 4th win of the season to improve her record to 4-0.
This weekend the Huskies will be hitting the road for two huge conference match-ups. First they will travel to Louisville, KY where they will face the Big East Conference leading Louisville Cardinals, and following that they will face Georgetown on Sunday. Coach Mullins said of the match-up with Louisville "We're going to have to go down there with our A game and get after them," she then added, "hopefully we come away with a couple W's and at minimum a split on the road."
