Cheerful music filtered from the Student Union Room 104 on Saturday afternoon at the first annual Polish festival Satursday. People sang karaoke in both Polish and English and led a group sing-along. UConn students taking Polish classes performed sketches, as did students from the Hartford Saturday Polish School. Elementary school children also read poems.

"The main goal of the festival was for students to get to know each other and become more motivated to learn Polish," said Salomea Pamula, a Polish professor and organizer of the event. "I'm happy with the turnout."

Attendees gathered around a table filled with colorful layered cakes, soda, Polish pickles, and Ptasie Mleczko, a chocolate-covered marshmallow candy. Conversation could be heard in both Polish and English.

Ania Lupinska, a 4th-semester business major, enjoyed the festival.

"Lots of students showed up, which is great. I hope we can do it again next semester and get more people involved," she said.

Polish classes are offered at UConn through the Critical Languages program in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages.

The Polish Cultural Society, a co-organizer of the event, is an organization open to anyone with an interest in Polish culture. Their goal is to spread awareness of Polish culture through trips and recreational events such as Saturday's Polish Festival.

I'm very pleased to hear of the turnout and success. Polish-Americans should be proud of their heritage and support such events. There are many festivals around the country organized with similar goals: get the Polish people together, celebrate our heritage, have fun and make new friends. (Continued…)
