EcoHusky, ResLife and the Department of Dining Services will run the first annual Spring Weekend recycling program from April 23 through April 26. The goal of the program is to fill drop-off boxes with the bottles that usually litter the campus during Spring Weekend.
"Someone had a suggestion: Have you ever looked at trying to capture bottles that appear over Spring Weekend and making good use of them?" said Dennis Pierce, director of Dining Services.
After hearing from Vice President of Student Affairs John Saddlemire, Pierce said Dining Services and EcoHusky, represented by Jennifer Sayers, the acting sustainablity coordinator of the Office of Environmental Policy, put their "heads together" and had a conference call to designate roles, Pierce said.
"We knew we'd be able to put together the infrastructure to have drop-off sites," Pierce said.
The Spring Weekend recycling program will serve a dual purpose.
"The first part of the vision is the recycling piece," Pierce said. "The second is to clean up the university over the weekend."
According to the Dining Services Web site, drop-off bins will be placed at the entrances of the dining halls, the Charter Oak grab-n-go and on the patio of the Student Union. Pierce said janitors will also bring materials from the recycling rooms in the dormitories to these locations.
The recyclables will be taken to a redemption center in Manchester on Monday. All proceeds will go toward the Student First fund, a fund designed to "assist students who need help due to some unforeseen hardship," Sayers said.
According to the Student Affairs Web site, the fund can be used for a variety of expenses, including books, clothing, groceries and other reasonable expenses. Students, staff and faculty can apply for assistance by filling out a nomination form with a 500-word statement outlining their financial needs. Graduate and undergraduate students will be given priority to the funds.
