So it has recently been announced that FOX would like to make a new X-Men film known as "X-Men: First Class." The film would focus on Professor Charles Xavier's first class of students, including the likes of Scott Summers/Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Hank McCoy/Beast. The original X-Men comic book also incorporated the likes of Iceman and Angel in the very first class, but producer Laura Donner has made no such mention of those characters. Now, there are a variety of ways that this could go down. It could be a fresh start for a franchise in desperate need of a resurrection ever since the abysmal "X-Men: The Last Stand." Or it could really just burn this franchise down to the ground. With the upcoming release of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," FOX has a chance to do a proper reboot of the franchise without worrying about staying in line with continuity. They have a chance to make Cyclops a capable leader and a likeable character again. They can show the true nature of the relationship between Jean and Scott, which is not so easily thwarted by the likes of Wolverine. Essentially, they could make the franchise watchable again. With a starting cast of only about four to five mutants, the story is not likely to get as crazy and convoluted as the other films. This way, the premise can be simple and accessible, yet entertaining.
Jean Grey
Evan Rachel Wood
Her roles in "The Wrestler" and "Across the Universe" showcase some extreme versatility. If this franchise ever gets to the point where Grey turns into the evil Phoenix, then that versatility will certainly come in handy. Wood also has a screen presence that would definitely bring some grace and stature to the young Jean Grey. In previous movies she has also dealt with multiple men vying for her affection, so that would be perfect, since that always happens to Jean. Let's also not forget that she really looks the part.
Runners Up: Cassidy Freeman ("Smallville")
Scott Summers/Cyclops
