Asher Roth is 'Asleep' at the microphone

His first debut album release, Asher Roth's "Asleep in the Bread Isle," is definitely unique from its hip-hop counterparts.
Delivering a suburban take on hip-hop culture and music, Roth delivers catchy, cookie-cutter beats that seem to be more humorous than talented.
With lyrics that appear to be more of a joke than stroke of artistic genius, it is confusing that anyone decided to even give Roth the opportunity to make an album.
Despite this, a surprising number of hip-hop artists collaborated with Roth on the album, including Estelle, Busta Rhymes and Cee-Lo.
Sounding more like a drunken person at a bar than a hip-hop artist, the single off of the album and recent MTV favorite, "I Love College" is catchy. That's about it. The song is as lyrically lacking as the rest of the album, featuring such brilliance as "I wanna go to college for the rest of my life/ Sip Banker's Club and drink Miller Lite / On Thirsty Thursday and Tuesday Night Ice / And I can get pizza a dollar a slice."
Many tracks on the album, such as "She Don't Want a Man" and "La Di Da," are not only lyrically lacking, but actually make the listener uncomfortable as Roth continuously moans "Uh" and "Uh-huh uh-huh" repeatedly to the beat.
Though this album is catchy, it is lacking in both lyrics and talent. An artist that will most likely be soon forgotten, Asher Roth's new album is worth an intoxicated listen and that's about it.
