Errors, walks hurt Huskies
Staff Reports
Issue date: 4/23/09 Section: Sports
The baseball team dropped its 17th game of the season on Wednesday, this time on the road against non-conference opponent Rhode Island, 3-1. The Huskies are now 22-17.
Matt McDonald pitched six and a third innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits, with four strikeouts and three walks.
The Rams jumped on the board in the second, after a throwing error by catcher Joe Pavone allowed Tom Coulombe to advance to third. It would be a double-play ball that allowed Coulombe to reach home.
Mike Nemeth helped the Huskies tie up the game in the fourth, hitting a double to left-centerfield to drive in George Springer.
But the Rams answered in the fifth when McDonald hit Rob Deveney to lead off the inning. Three batter later, Milan Adams stepped to the plate and recorded a sacrifice fly to bring Deveney home. It was all the team needed to secure a win with the pitching performance from Rhode Island's starter, Ken Graveline. He allowed just one run through six and a third, with seven hits and seven strikeouts.
The Rams improved to 26-13-1 for the season.
Springer, coming off a 4-for-5, 6 RBI performance against Quinnipiac Monday, went 0-for-3 Wednesday afternoon. Nemeth finished the day going 2-for-4, as did Nick Ahmed.
UConn will face St. John's for a three-game series, which will start Friday at 3 p.m. at J.O. Christian field.
