The UConn women's rowing team finished sixth overall at the Big East Championship Regatta in Camden, N.J., on Saturday.
Notre Dame won the regatta with 112 points. Runner up Syracuse finished with 97 points, followed by Louisville (92 points), Georgetown (85) and Rutgers (56). UConn placed sixth with 52 points, in front of Villanova (46) and West Virginia (38).
"We were disappointed with the overall results," said UConn head coach Jennifer Sanford.
According to Sanford, the biggest disappointment was the novice eight, which finished first in the petite final, good for seventh overall. Syracuse finished first in the grand final.
"I think they expected to finish second in their heat," Sanford said. "When they saw that the other crews were keeping up with them and then passing them, they couldn't settle to their race pace and ended up finishing where they did."
The novice eight was led by coxswain Sara Trevisani, stroke Diana Filipek, Amanda Sibley, Andriel Doolittle, Mary Grace Haggett, Rosie Edreira, Amy Kessler, Kate Siracusa and bow Dana Haddad. They finished the race in 7:33.503, 40 seconds ahead of Louisville.
The varsity eight also struggled, finishing 6th in the grand final with a time of 7:08.959. "They had a good heat, but they rowed terribly in the final," said Sanford. Louisville won the race with a time of 6:30.845.
The varsity eight was led by coxswain Leah Masopust, stroke Gretchen Stern, Kim Weber, Kathy Les, Sarah Willhoft, Audrey Squire, Sylvia Czupi, Jenny Reynolds and bow Katie Rauscher.
Despite their sixth place finish, there were some bright spots for the Huskies. "Both the [second varsity eight] and the varsity four had great races," Sanford said.
The second varsity eight had the best finish of the day for the Huskies. Led by coxswain Mikey Sevick, stroke Rebecca Likar, Kristen Beasley, Julie Konstantino, Lizzie Littlewood, Jessica Chames, Liz Harsley, Morfia Efthimiou, and Amanda Cote, the crew finished 4th in the grand final with a time of 7:04.543. Notre Dame won the race with a time of 6:42.547.
Although they did not make the final, the varsity four, made up entirely of first year rowers, also had a good race according to Sanford. Powered by stroke Elizabeth Bernard, Diana Ramirez, Beth Flatley, Kylie Angell, and coxswain Hailey Rosa, UConn finished 1st in the petite final with a time of 8:29.816, 25 seconds ahead of Rutgers. Notre Dame won the grand final.
The Huskies will take the next two weeks to prepare for their final race of the season, the Dad Vail Championship in Philadelphia on May 8 and 9.
