Point/Counterpoint: Who will win the NBA Championship?
Issue date: 4/29/09 Section: Sports
The Los Angeles Lakers, backed by one of the best players in the game, Kobe Bryant, will dominate all competition in the Western Conference as well as whatever team decides to make it out of the East this year. When you support the "Black Mamba" with players like Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum, Lamar Odom, Derek Fisher and Trevor Ariza, you get an unbelievably dirty team that has all the essential parts to win a championship. And let's not forget, the Lakers have Phil Jackson - one of the most successful coaches of all time - at the helm of this basketball team.
The Cleveland Cavilers will win the NBA championship this year. The best player in the NBA, LeBron James, is on a mission for a title, and he will be accompanied by a team that he loves. The addition of Mo Williams has offically taken this team over the top. Add Big-Z, Delonte and home court throughout the playoffs, and the Cavs are virtually unstoppable. No team will be able to match up with them.
Marc: The powerhouse of the West, the Los Angeles Lakers, will come flying through the postseason and you'll be seeing Kobe "The Black Mamba" Bryant and company hoist up the NBA Championship trophy at the end of June.
Jake: LeBron and company will have something to do with that. Bron-Bron has led the Cavs to the best record in the league, and will be taking home the title this season.
Marc: James and his fellow comrades are good, but honestly, I don't think they have enough firepower to overcome an extremely deep Lakers team.
Jake: I believe that Mo Williams is the addition that has pushed the Cavs over the top in terms of talent. Add to that a deep bench and the best player in the league and you have a scary team.
Marc: Well the whole 'best player in the league' thing is very debatable, and if I'm not mistaken, Kevin Duffy beat you in a Point/Counterpoint earlier this year on that same issue - but that's beside the point. How can you say the Cavaliers are going to beat the Lakers, when L.A. beat Cleveland twice this year in the regular season, including the one of the only two losses the Cavs had at home?
