EcoHusky's annual move-out campaign, entitled "Give 'N' Go", will run from May 5 to May 10 during finals week this year.

According to Jennifer Sayers, the sustainability coordinator at the Office of Environmental Policy, the program was originally started in the spring of 2005 by the Green Grads, a environmental group of graduate students, and was designed to capture a large amount of the reusable materials produced by the students moving out and get them into the hands of local groups and people in need of them.

"We'll reduce the amount of waste being generated by the University while providing a valuable service to the community," Sayers said in an e-mail interview.

Sayers also said that between 60 and 80 additional tons of trash are generated from move-out each spring.

"Much of these materials are still perfectly usable but students just don't have room for them in the cars/buses/trains/planes or don't want to deal with the hassle of moving it all home," she said.

The collected materials will be donated to various locations, including ACCESS AGENCY, Ashford Foodbank, Cornerstone Shelter and the Covenant Soup Kitchen.

Richard Miller, the director of the Office of Environmental Policy (OEP), said that the program has been expanded this year. Plans to expand the program began in January.

Sayers said that the ten sponsors of the program, including OEP, ResLife, Community Outreach and Dining Services, don't have a numerical goal this year as they don't know what to expect.

"Our goal is simply to collect as much as we can and put it to good use," Sayers said. "This is going to be a learning process for us since we've never attempted a move-out program on this scale, so we're hoping to figure out the most effective system for running the program so that we can continue to expand in the future."

From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 11 collection stations will be set up in locations such as Towers, North, Northwest, Shippee and East. On Saturday and Sunday, there will be collection points open at Towers, East, Shippee and Busby Suites during the same timeframe.

"We encourage students to donate as early in the week as possible and as early in the day as possible to give us maximum time for moving materials to storage until being distributed to our partners," Sayers said.

Non-perishables, clothing, furniture and kitchen supplies are among the list of accepted items posted on the ecohusky website: www.ecohusky.uconn.edu. Those interested in volunteering on Saturday and Sunday can visit the Web site and sign up for a shift.
