A walk to aid women in the Darfur region of Sudan will take place this Saturday from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., beginning at Fairfield Way.
The walk is sponsored by Sudan-Reach, a group that plans to build a safehouse for women in Darfur who have been displaced by rampant violence and genocide. The safehouse will provide food, clothing, job training and education to women in Darfur.
There are over 710,000 displaced people living in camps and settlements throughout Sudan, according to information posted on Sudan-Reach's web site. The money raised from the walk will go directly to building the safehouse, which is set to open this November.
Allison Nangle, a 4th-semester environmental science major, organized the event on her own, with sponsorship from the Women's Center.
Registration is free, and there will be free T-shirts, water bottles and food at the walk, Nangle said.
"I realize that everyone is college students, so I didn't want to put a registration fee, because then people won't sign up," Nangle said.
Students can sign up at 11:30 a.m. on Fairfield Way or can sign up online on sudanreach.org. Walkers can have pledge sponsors, or just participate. Donations are not necessary, but are greatly encouraged, Nangle said.
The walk is 2.5 miles around the campus, beginning and ending at Fairfield Way.
This is the second walk that Sudan-Reach has done at a college campus to raise funds for their cause. The first was at Boston University on April 25.
