A UConn 2009 graduate passed away only two weeks after he received his diploma.
Brian Costello died on May 25, due to medical complications caused by a blood clot blocking the airway in his lungs, according to Costello's brother-in-law, Chris Moyer. Costello graduated from the School of Business with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and was enrolled in the Master of Science Program in Accounting at UConn.
Vice President for Student Affairs, John R. Saddlemire, notified the UConn community about Costello's death with an e-mail announcement.
Costello graduated from Weston High School in 2005 where he played varsity football, was co-captain of the Weston-Staples co-op hockey team and played in the jazz band.
During his time at UConn, Costello was a member of the Beta Alpha Psi business fraternity and played club rugby.
Friends and family dedicated a Facebook page to Costello, designating a place to leave memories and messages of sympathy. Many members of the group remember Costello for being "loved by everyone with whom he had contact" and "a fun and compassionate person."
Devin Malloy, a close friend of Costello and a UConn 2009 graduate of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a psychology major, remembers Costello as a positive person with a good nature.
"Brian was a gentle giant with his own brand of goofy charm that was always present and it had the power to immediately brighten anyone's day," Malloy said. "Those of us who lived with him through the years could always count on him to be himself, and to make everyone else smile while doing so,"
Costello is survived by his mother, Jeanette Rybaczyk Costello, and three sisters, Dr. Elizabeth Costello-Moyer, Dyana C. Costello, and Meghan Costello.
"Even after his death he continues to make us smile as we keep his memory strong," said Malloy
Condolences to the Costello family can be sent to the Dean of Students Office, U-4062.
