UConn is ranked the best public university in New England by U.S. News & World Report for the 11th year in a row, according to ratings released in their August 2009 issue.

The rankings, which are released annually, are divided into several categories based on geographical location and type of institution.

The university was named the 26th best public university in the nation for the second year in a row from a list of over 160 public colleges and universities in the nation according to the U.S. News & World Report web site. UConn was also ranked the 66th best university overall from a selection of 262 institutions nationwide.

UConn President Michael Hogan was content with UConn's status in the rankings.

"Given the tight financial situation the University finds itself in, and the dire shape of the national economy, I am very pleased that we have retained our position among the best public universities in the nation, and are more highly rated this year than ever before by our peers," he said in an Aug. 21 article in UConn Today.

Some students feel that the ranking is a positive sign for UConn's future.

"I think that UConn is certainly a growing university and has the capabilities to compete with the nationally ranked schools," said Laura Czernik, a 7th-semester communication disorders major. "It has plans to improve the campus and is accepting more and more competitive students. I know that this incoming freshman class had the highest overall SAT score in UConn history."

Chana Rich believes that UConn's status in the report will have an impact on graduating high school seniors' decision to enroll.

"It would show me that compared to other public schools, UConn stands out," said Rich, a 5th-semester physiology and neurobiology major.
