The American Clean Energy and Securities Act or A.C.E.S. was recently passed in the House over this summer. The goal of the bill is to reduce global warming, create clean energy jobs, create energy independence, and transition into a cleaner economy, according to a Web site promoting the bill. The bill, supported by President Obama, is expected to greatly reduce green house gas emissions. But, some argue that it will greatly increase taxes and will not help the environment as much as predicted, according Mother Nature Network's Web site.

UConn PIRG's campaign in support of the bill is hoping to get the bill passed in the senate. The 366 pinwheels are in the shape of A.C.E.S. to get students asking questions. Many students have gone up to the table asking what the pinwheels were for.

The pinwheels also represent "the 366 wind turbines needed to power all of Tolland County," Marisa Gumpert, a 7th-semester English major said.

"The campaign is also helping to raise awareness about the U.N. climate talks in Copenhagen," Chris Berthlaume, a 5th-semester environmental engineering major said.

The U.N. climate talk is scheduled for December 7th. This international convention will focus on environmental issues and how to reduce global warming, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Web site said. It was also continue to raise awareness about these issues.

UConn PIRG is sending written and photo petitions in support of the bill to Sen. Joe Lieberman. By doing this, they hope to show how students are involved in the issues and in supporting the bill.

Any student can take a picture with a pinwheel at the table and sign their name to the petition. The table will be there until Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
