Droves of students camped outside Gampel Pavilion Thursday night in hopes of getting good seats - or seats at all - to the highly anticipated annual Lip Sync show. After an hour-long wait in the cold and the snow, cheers resounded as the doors finally opened and the crowd of students rushed into the arena.
"A Spoonful of Fun" was the theme for the annual SUBOG-organized event that is part of a multi-day celebration of Homecoming. Fraternities, sororities, and cultural centers alike adorned themselves in cereal-themed costumes and centered the storylines of their performances around their respective breakfast foods.
With UCTV's funnyman Joey Homza as emcee for the night, the show kicked off with a Dora the Explorer-themed performance from the Puerto Rican and Latin American Cultural Center.
As the second group made their way to the stage, 1st-semester animal sciences major Kayleigh Meyer said, "I'm excited to see so many people get together and express the diversity of our university."
And the following ensembles did just that. The groups gave their all to the antsy crowd - and the nine-person panel of judges, who decided the winners based on creativity, routine and representation of the theme. These prerequisites in place, the first and second place awards for Theme-Funded Cultural Centers went to crowd favorites the Asian American Cultural Center (ASACC) and the African American Cultural Center (AACC), respectively.
Kayla Dias, a sociology and African American studies double major who performed with the AACC, was thrilled after the show. "We didn't place last year, so [this] was amazing," Dias said.
Global House took first place in the Non-Theme Funded category while Kappa Kappa Gamma won first for the Greek groups.
"Placing first two years in a row was truly a great accomplishment for Global House," said Jimmy Tang, a 5th-semester applied mathematics and finance double major who performed with the group. "During both years we gave it all we got and just tried to have fun with it ... Everyone in Global House and Hillel worked so hard this year and we're just so happy to be recognized for it."
Despite a couple of technical glitches, the show - and its stars, of course - was a stunning success.

DO SOME RESEARCH. Kappa Kappa Gamma was paired with Beta Theta Pi and Delta Chi and you didn't mention either of those groups, even though they were all part of the SAME TEAM. (Continued…)
