UConn has selected David Gilbertson as the new associate vice president and chief information officer.

Gilbertson will begin working at UConn in Jan., 2010.

He will be responsible for the data management and information technology services not only at Storrs, but at the regional branches and the law school, said Barry Feldman, vice president and chief operating officer at UConn.

"I've never worked in this capacity and at a state university, but I like the opportunity, the challenge and the new situation," said Gilbertson.

Currently, Gilbertson is the deputy commander of the U.S. Army's Institute of Surgical Research.

He has served in the U.S. Army for 26 years and was previously the CIO of the Tripler Army Medical Center and the Army Medical Department Center and School, which serves 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

Gilbertson was also the executive program manager for the Pentagon's $1.5 billion Electronic Health Record, according to the official announcement sent to the UConn community on Oct. 23.

"There's a difference in the culture between where I've worked and UConn, but I'm going to listen and learn from the students. Usually it's the students who come up with the best ideas," said Gilbertson.

The previous CIO, Michael Kernke, left the university in Jan. 2009. Since his departure, David Martel has served as the interim CIO.

"I am confident that [Gilbertson's] extensive [information technology] background and experience in academic research institutions will help us continue to improve IT services for the entire University community," said Feldman, who Gilbertson will report to.

Martel has agreed to stay on as a deputy CIO, to provide transitional help and support to Gilbertson, according to Feldman.

A CIO search committee, chaired by Debra Kendall, UConn professor of Molecular and Cell Biology, was created to help screen and determine final candidates for the CIO position.

Gilbertson applied for the position and has been communicating with the search committee since June.

"Essentially, he found us," said Feldman.

The search committee invited Gilbertson and two finalists to visit UConn, where each finalist met with UConn President Hogan and student representatives of UConn's IT support.

Gilbertson was invited back to UConn again, where he was offered the position.

Since then, Gilbertson has returned to Storrs to search for a new house for him and his family.

He currently lives in San Antonio, Texas, with his wife Nancy and two sons Zachary and Nicholas.
