Despite the cold New England weather, the members of the recently formed GeoClub gathered last Wednesday in Beach Hall to plan more events for their new organization. The GeoClub was formed this year, parallel to the new geoscience major.

"Geoscience was just instated this year …we decided that we should have a club now that the major is official," said Catie Thorne, a 7th-semester geoscience major and secretary of the GeoClub.

The group discusses topics and plans events related to geology and earth science. This includes field trips, movie nights, rock and mineral collecting, along with outreach activities. While the club may be new its members are optimistic about the future.

"Right now we're in the infant stage, but I want [GeoClub] to become a cool group of people who want to go out and see some stuff," said Kaitlin Arnold, an 8th- semester geoscience major and the president of the GeoClub.

The meeting opened up informally with Arnold having examples of red garnet minerals passed around. These minerals were found on the last GeoClub field trip to a garnet cave in Willington. From there the discussion moved to ideas for a movie night thrown by the club featuring a scary movie involving geology.

Conversation in the meeting was mostly focused on where the next field trip would go. The members seemed intent on getting out on as many trips as possible before winter.

"We are able to go out and see the geology in Connecticut, which may not be as cool as the Grand Canyon, but there are some cool things to see," Said Thorne.

The group decided on a day trip to Torry Cave in Kent. to explore the geological features, in addition to a trip to Mansfield Hollow State Park for the same reason.

The group also talked about going to the Geological Society of Connecticut for their first annual dinner November 9th at Dinosaur State Park in Rocky Hill. Arnold said that the trip was not only a good resume builder for members but it was also a great opportunity to meet some very interesting geologists.

Before dismissing the meeting Arnold reminded members that anyone is welcome to join or come on trips.

"Everyone is welcome- Geology is blind," said Arnold.

The UConn GeoClub meets every Wednesday at 4 pm in Beach Hall room 233.
