With seconds remaining in the first half of play, freshman Kelly Faris found herself on the receiving end of Tina Charles' outlet pass. Faris took a dribble and put in a layup just as time expired.
Although Faris finds herself the only true freshman on the team, she was in the middle of the action during last night's exhibition game against the College of Saint Rose. Faris attended Heritage Christian High School where she won four straight state titles in basketball and is the all-time leader in rebounds, assists and steals and second in points at the high school.
"I was defiantly anxious, it was my first college game," Faris said. "But it was a lot of fun and a good experience."
Her game showed no nerves. Faris had 14 points, four assists, three steals and two boards during 25 minutes of play. She was also 2 of 4 from beyond the arc and 6 of 8 from the floor in total.
Faris held her own in her very first game. Unnoticed in the box score was the hustle that she showed, hitting the deck on a few occasions and scraping for boards underneath the hoop.
"I told you guys she doesn't play bad games, I don't know if she is going to play great games every night," said head coach Geno Auriemma. "But she did today what she does in practice every day she gets involved in a lot of stuff and makes things happen."
All-American Performances
Preseason All-American selections Maya Moore and Tina Charles both had good games in their first game since going undefeated and wining the national championship last year. Moore finished the night as the leading scorer with 19 points. She also hauled in seven boards, dished out six assists, blocked two shots and had five steals. Charles posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards, and shot 50 percent from the field. The two were among four Huskies who scored in double figures, the others being Caroline Doty who returned from injury and Faris.
Dominance
The Huskies completely controlled the Division II College of St. Rose taking home every statistical category.
